10 Rules for Pruning Fruit Trees

1. Prune for sunlight first

Fruit quality depends on light. Open the canopy so sunlight reaches all major branches—especially the

lower and interior wood.

2. Remove the “3 D’s” every time

Always start by cutting out dead, diseased, and damaged wood. This improves tree health immediately

and simplifies the rest of your decisions.

3. Eliminate crossing and rubbing branches

If two branches touch, one has to go. Rubbing causes wounds and creates entry points for disease.

4. Maintain a strong structure

Most fruit trees perform best in either a central leader (apples, pears) or open center (peaches,

nectarines). Keep branch angles around 45–60°.

5. Cut back to outward-facing buds

Make cuts just above a bud pointing away from the center of the tree. This directs new growth outward

and keeps the canopy open.

6. Control height aggressively

If you can’t reach it, you won’t manage it. Keep trees around 8–12 feet and cut tall leaders back to

lateral branches.

7. Remove vertical “water sprouts”

These fast-growing shoots don’t produce quality fruit, shade the tree, and waste energy. Remove them

early when possible.

8. Thin, don’t just head

Thinning cuts remove a branch entirely and improve airflow. Heading cuts shorten branches but

stimulate bushy growth. Favor thinning cuts.

9. Don’t over-prune

Never remove more than 25–30% of the canopy in one season. Over-pruning leads to excessive

vegetative growth and reduced fruiting.

10. Time it right

Dormant pruning (late winter) is best for structure. Summer pruning helps control size. Avoid heavy fall

pruning. Stone fruits are often best pruned late winter/early spring.

Bonus Tips:

- Aim for uniform trees for easier management and spraying.

- Prioritize production and accessibility over perfect appearance.

- Keep spacing and structure consistent for efficiency
